Grandpa Earl Sat Down With a Cold Lemonade. Duchess Claimed His Lap First.
It is the kind of hot afternoon that calls for shade and something cold. Earl leans back on the porch, glasses on and stubble silver, sipping lemonade through a straw from a tall glass with a lemon slice floating on top. Duchess has made herself at home across his denim lap, her long white fur fluffed out in every direction and her blue-gray eyes half-open in lazy contentment. Behind them, the yard is full of life: a watering can, potted herbs, a jar of garden tools, a pair of gloves, and laundry hanging on the line.
Warm weather requires a bit of extra care for long-haired, flat-faced cats like Persians. Their thick coats hold heat, and their short noses can make it harder to cool off by panting. Keep them in shaded, well-ventilated spots, and make sure fresh water is always available. Some owners add a cooling mat or keep a fan running nearby. Regular brushing to remove loose undercoat can also help with airflow. Watch for signs of overheating, such as rapid breathing, open-mouth panting, drooling, or lethargy, and bring the cat somewhere cool right away if these appear, then call your vet. As for the lemonade, citrus is best kept away from cats.
Earl gets his cold drink and Duchess gets the softest seat on the porch. On a slow summer day like this, it seems like everyone in the household has found exactly what they need.
