Every Night Grandpa Earl Kneels by the Little Bed. Duchess Waits for It.
Bedtime in Earl's house includes full tuck-in service. He crouches beside a plush gray pet bed on the wooden floor, his overalls and plaid shirt rumpled from the day, and carefully drapes a cream knit blanket over Duchess. The Persian sits nestled in the middle of the bed, copper eyes looking up at him with a calm, slightly sleepy expression. Earl's smile is soft and full of affection. Around them, the room is homey and lived-in, with a wicker basket of laundry, a pair of slippers, a glass of water and a remote on the nightstand, and plants soaking up light by the window.
Cats love warm, enclosed spaces to sleep, which is why round, bolster-style beds are so popular with them. The raised sides give a sense of security, and a soft blanket adds warmth, which older cats and short-coated breeds especially appreciate. Placing the bed in a quiet spot away from drafts and foot traffic helps a cat feel safe enough to relax. Wash bedding regularly to keep fur, dander, and any fleas under control. For long-haired breeds like Persians, a bed with smooth fabric can also reduce tangling. Many cats also enjoy having more than one favorite resting spot around the house.
Duchess looks perfectly ready for a long, peaceful snooze, and Earl seems happy to make sure she is comfortable before calling it a night. Some routines are simple, and they are the sweetest ones.
