Grandpa Was Flipping Pancakes for One. The Kitchen Inspector Showed Up Anyway.

Two golden pancakes sizzle in a black skillet, their edges crisp and lacy. Earl stands at the gas stove in his overalls and olive work shirt, spatula in hand, glasses low on his nose as he checks for just the right shade of brown. Duchess has taken up a front-row seat on the counter beside the stove, sitting tall with her white fur fluffed and her copper eyes glued to the pan. The kitchen around them is cheerfully crowded with a jar of flour, a dish of butter, a dish towel, a pot, and plants on the windowsill.

Cats love a good vantage point, and the kitchen counter is often their favorite. But near a stove, curiosity can be risky. Hot burners, splattering grease, and open flames can cause painful burns, and long-haired cats like Persians can be especially at risk around gas burners. Many owners train cats to stay off counters by giving them a tall cat tree or perch nearby, so they can still watch the action from a safe spot. Rewarding a cat for using that perch works better than scolding. As for pancakes, butter, syrup, and sweet batter are not good for cats, so it is best that Duchess just enjoys the smell.

Earl's pancakes look perfect, and his loyal kitchen supervisor seems to approve. A slow weekend breakfast with good company is one of life's small but very real pleasures.
