Grandpa Earl Set Up His Easel in the Yard. Duchess Had a Different Idea of Art.

Paint tubes, brushes, and smeared rags lie scattered across the grass around a wooden easel. Earl sits on a small folding stool in his paint-splattered overalls, reading glasses pushed up onto his head, carefully adding brushstrokes to a misty landscape of green hills and pale sky. His palette is a happy mess of colors. At the foot of the easel, Duchess has stretched out on her side in the grass, long white fur spread around her like a cloud, eyes closed in a deep, blissful nap. A watering can, clay pots, and more canvases leaning against the fence complete the backyard studio.

Painting outdoors with a pet nearby is a lovely way to spend an afternoon, but art supplies need careful handling around animals. Many oil paints, solvents, and turpentine are harmful if ingested, and cats are especially at risk because they groom themselves constantly. A cat that brushes against wet paint may lick it off later. Keep rinse cups, open tubes, and rags out of reach, and consider water-based paints when pets are around. If your cat does get paint on its fur, do not use solvents to remove it. Instead, call your vet for advice. A shady, comfortable spot a few feet away from the supplies is ideal.

Earl's painting is coming along beautifully, and his model, though not posing, is certainly relaxed. Perhaps the next canvas will feature a sleeping white cat in the grass.
