Grandma June Fell Asleep in Her Recliner. Blue Decided Someone Had to Keep Watch.

The TV is dark and the afternoon has gone quiet. June has drifted off in her brown recliner, head tipped back against the cushion and mouth slightly open, wrapped in a cream puffer vest and gray sweater. Blue has propped himself up with both front paws on the arm of the chair, his blue merle face with copper eyebrows hovering right beside her. His mismatched eyes are wide open and alert, as if he has appointed himself guardian of her nap. Around them, the living room is comfortably cluttered with a basket of yarn, a plush blanket, books, a remote, and a pair of glasses on the coffee table.

Australian Shepherds are known for being loyal and protective of their families. Many Aussies keep a close watch over their people, following them from room to room and staying alert even when the household is resting. This devotion is part of what makes the breed such a good companion. However, it can also turn into clinginess if the dog never learns to settle on its own. Practicing calm time on a dog bed, with a chew or toy, helps an Aussie learn to relax. And, as with any dog, it is wise to check under and around recliners before closing them, as paws and tails can get pinched.

June may be fast asleep, but she is clearly in very good hands. Blue will be right there when she wakes up, probably hoping a walk is next on the agenda.
