Grandma June Was Washing Her Old Car. Then Blue Discovered the Garden Hose.
Car wash day in the driveway has turned into a water park. June leans against the side of a tan sedan, scrubbing the door with a blue sponge, her olive quilted vest and plaid shirt already speckled with suds. She is smiling behind her glasses, clearly amused by her assistant. Blue is front and center, his blue merle face filling the foreground and his mouth wide open as he snaps at the arc of water spraying from the green garden hose. Droplets fly everywhere. Behind them, the garage is crowded with laundry baskets, boots, potted plants, and tools.
Many dogs love chasing water from a hose or sprinkler, and on a warm day it can be a fun way to cool off and burn energy. Australian Shepherds, with their love of games and quick reflexes, often adore it. A few precautions keep it safe. Use gentle water pressure, as a strong blast to the face can hurt eyes or force water down the throat. Do not let a dog gulp large amounts of water during play, since drinking too much too quickly can cause problems. Also keep dogs away from car soaps, cleaners, and puddles of runoff, which can contain chemicals. Rinse and towel off your dog afterward.
The car may not end up spotless, but June and Blue are clearly having the time of their lives. Some chores were meant to be shared with a soggy, happy dog.
