A white-haired woman in a green vest hugs a blue merle Australian Shepherd as they look out a frosty window at falling snow. 25 / 30

The First Snow of the Year Started Falling. Grandma June Brought Blue to the Window.

Snowflakes drift past the frosty glass, settling on rooftops, fences, and a patio table outside. Inside, June stands close to the window with her arms wrapped around Blue, who has propped himself up so his face is right at the pane. His blue merle fur is thick and fluffy for winter, and his bright blue eye is fixed on the swirling snow outside. June rests her cheek near his head and smiles softly, watching him watch the world turn white. Behind them, the warm kitchen glows with a knit throw on a chair and a few potted plants on the sill.

Australian Shepherds have a dense double coat that offers good protection against cold, and many love romping in the snow. Even so, winter care matters. Keep outings reasonable in very low temperatures, and watch for signs your dog is too cold, such as shivering or lifting paws. Snow can pack into balls between the toes and in the fur, so trimming the hair around the paw pads helps. Wipe paws after walks to remove ice, road salt, and de-icing chemicals, which can irritate skin and are harmful if licked. Antifreeze is especially dangerous because of its sweet taste, so clean up any spills immediately.

For now, Blue seems content to admire the snow from the warmth of June's arms. Soon enough, he will be out there making tracks, but this quiet moment at the window is a sweet one.
