Grandpa Climbed Into the Old Truck for an Errand. His Co-Pilot Was Ready.

The cab of the old pickup smells like years of errands and road trips. Grandpa Gus sits behind the wheel in his red and black flannel, glasses low and a gentle smile on his face as he looks over at his passenger. Pearl sits upright on the cracked blue vinyl seat, her fluffy white face turned toward the front window, a little brown leather collar peeking out from her silky fur. Her dark eyes and black button nose give her a look of serious responsibility, as though she's in charge of navigation today. Sunlight pours through the windows from the leafy street outside.

Small dogs like Maltese often love riding along on errands, but safety matters in the car. A loose dog can be thrown forward in a sudden stop, and a little dog can easily slip into the footwell near the pedals. The safest options are a secured travel crate or a dog car seat or harness that clips into the seat belt system, ideally in the back. Never leave a dog alone in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes, since temperatures inside a car can rise to dangerous levels very quickly, even on mild days.

Pearl looks like she has been Gus's co-pilot for many a trip to the hardware store and back. The way he smiles at her says she's the best traveling companion he's ever had.

The radio may not work and the seat may be cracked, but this old truck carries precious cargo.
