Grandpa Rolled Out a Yoga Mat for His Stretches. Pearl Signed Up for the Class.
The living room lamp casts a warm glow as Grandpa Gus settles onto a grey yoga mat for his evening stretches. He sits with one leg extended, reaching toward his bare toes with a determined look, his red flannel sleeves pushed up a little. Pearl has trotted right onto the mat with him, standing square in front of his knee with her fluffy tail curled up and her face turned forward as if she's ready for the next instruction. Scattered dog toys and a couple of chew bones lie across the wooden floor, slippers wait by the dresser, and family photos line the windowsill.
Gentle stretching is often recommended to help older adults stay flexible and comfortable, though it's always a good idea to check with your doctor before starting a new routine. Doing it alongside a pet can make the habit more enjoyable and easier to stick with. Dogs stretch naturally after rest, and a play bow is part stretch, part invitation. When your dog joins your floor exercises, move slowly, be aware of where little paws are, and give small breeds their own space on the mat so no one gets bumped or squished.
Pearl isn't quite matching Gus's form, but she's undeniably committed to showing up. Having a cheerful little workout buddy may be the best motivation there is.
The stretches might be tough, but the company makes every minute on that mat worth it.
