Grandpa Dipped His Feet in the Lake at Dusk. Pearl Stole the Whole Scene.
Evening has settled over the lake, and the lantern at the end of the dock has just flickered on. Grandpa Gus sits on the weathered planks in his red flannel shirt, trousers rolled and bare feet dipped into the cool, dark water. He's smiling at something just off to the side, relaxed and content. Front and center, Pearl the Maltese has scooted right up close with her round black eyes and button nose, her fluffy white face filling the foreground as if she's decided this moment is all about her. Reeds and trees line the far shore, softened by the fading light.
Maltese are small companion dogs, and while many enjoy outings, they aren't natural swimmers. Their small size and long coat can make it hard for them to stay afloat or climb out if they slip in. Around docks, pools, and lakes, it's wise to keep small dogs on a leash or fitted with a dog life jacket, and to stay close at all times. Their white coats also pick up dirt quickly, so a gentle wipe-down or bath after time outdoors can help keep them clean and comfortable. Fresh water and shade are a must on warm days.
Pearl looks perfectly content to stay dry and let Gus do the paddling. She has the best seat on the dock, right in the glow of the lantern, and she knows it.
Lakeside evenings are lovely on their own, but they're even better with a small, fluffy friend who loves being in the picture.
