Copper Explored the Whole Garden. At the Porch Steps, He Made a Request.
After a long wander around the garden, Copper has decided he's done walking. Grandma Ruth cradles him in her arms at the foot of the weathered wooden porch steps, his front paws draped over her sleeve and his big ears perked up as he looks out over the yard. She smiles down at him with obvious affection, her silver hair tied up and her chunky knit cardigan making a soft nest for him. Potted plants line the steps, a green watering can sits in the grass, and the garden behind them is full of herbs and late-season blooms.
Abyssinians are among the more athletic and active cat breeds, and many enjoy exploring outdoors on a harness and leash under supervision. Even so, they can tire out after a busy outing. When picking up a cat, support both the chest and the hind legs so their weight is evenly balanced, and hold them close to your body to help them feel secure. Afterward, it's a good idea to check their coat for burrs, ticks, or seeds, especially around the ears and paws, and offer fresh water once they're back inside.
Copper looks perfectly comfortable being carried, as though he expects this kind of royal treatment at the end of every adventure. Ruth doesn't seem to mind one bit.
Some walks end at the front door. The best ones end in the arms of someone who loves you.
