An older Asian American man paints a landscape at a small wooden easel in a backyard as a brindle Boxer sleeps on the ground. 13 / 29

Grandpa Ken Spent All Afternoon Painting Trees. Rocco Had a Different Project.

The backyard has become an open-air studio. Grandpa Ken sits on a folding chair in a gray sweater vest, glasses low on his nose, dabbing at a small canvas of green trees and a winding path. Tubes of paint, rags, and brushes are scattered everywhere: in a wicker basket, on the patio stones, beside a pair of slippers. A blue watering can, potted herbs, a stack of firewood, and a tennis ball complete the comfortable clutter. And stretched out flat right beside the easel lies Rocco, legs straight out, chin on the ground, eyes closed in a deep afternoon sleep.

Dogs are wonderful companions for quiet hobbies because they are content just to be near their people. A dog that has had a good walk or play session earlier in the day is much more likely to settle while you paint, read, or garden. Art supplies do need a watchful eye around pets, though. Some paints, solvents, and cleaning products can be harmful if licked or chewed, and paint tubes can look a lot like chew toys to a curious dog. Keep caps on, put rags and rinse water up high, and pack supplies away when you are done. If your dog does get into something, call your vet or a pet poison hotline.

Ken's landscape is coming along nicely, but the real masterpiece might be the snoring Boxer at his feet. Next time, perhaps Rocco will get his own portrait.
