Grandpa Started Whittling on the Porch. Copper Appointed Himself Supervisor.

Evening has settled over the yard, and the porch light glows warm against the siding. Grandpa Hank, in a faded ball cap and his usual overalls, sits hunched over a small block of pale wood, working a knife along its edge in slow, careful strokes. Curls of shaving drop onto the boards around his boots, and Copper is fascinated. The Husky leans in close, nose nearly touching the wood, eyes tracking every flake as it tumbles down. Behind them the garden fades into blue dusk, with a fence line and potted plants barely visible.

Huskies are famously curious, and their noses rarely stop working. Fresh wood has a strong scent, and to a dog every falling curl is something new to investigate. That curiosity is charming, but it is worth keeping hobby areas safe. Sharp tools, small offcuts, and splinters can all cause trouble if a dog decides to taste them, so a quick sweep after a whittling session is a good habit. Some woods and finishes can also be irritating if chewed. If you want to give your dog a job during your hobbies, a sturdy chew toy or a scent game nearby can redirect that interest in a safer direction.

Still, there is something lovely about a dog who simply wants to be included in whatever his person is doing. Copper is not trying to help, exactly, but he is fully committed to supervising.

Maybe the finished carving will be a little wooden Husky. He has certainly earned it.
