Grandpa Ken Pulled the Quilt Over His Knees by the Fire. He Wasn't Alone for Long.
Behind them a fire roars in the stone fireplace, logs glowing orange, and the whole living room is wrapped in that deep, drowsy warmth of a winter evening. Grandpa Ken sits back in an armchair under a soft patchwork quilt of creams and blue plaids, wearing a gray knit sweater vest over a flannel shirt, his glasses glinting as he smiles down. Mochi sits right on top of the quilt in his lap, her long cream coat fluffed out, gazing up at the camera with sleepy dark eyes. A basket of yarn, a stack of books, a mug, and a framed photo on the mantel complete the cozy scene.
Small dogs like the Havanese often love warm spots, and a lap by the fire is about as good as it gets. Their silky coat does provide some insulation, but because they are small, they can lose body heat faster than larger dogs in cold weather. A sweater for chilly walks and a soft, draft-free bed indoors can help. Around the fireplace, always use a sturdy screen, keep tools and fire starters out of reach, and make sure your dog can move away from the heat when she wants to. Never leave a fire burning unattended with pets in the room.
Ken looks perfectly content with a quilt over his knees and his little companion keeping him company. Mochi seems to agree that this is the best seat in the house.
Cold nights are made for moments like this one: a warm fire, a soft quilt, and a friend who never wants to leave your side.
