Grandpa Ken Climbed Into the Hammock for a Short Rest. Mochi Made It a Long One.
A cream rope hammock sways gently between two big tree trunks, and fallen oak leaves are scattered across the grass below. Grandpa Ken has drifted off in it, eyes closed, wearing a knit sweater vest over a light blue shirt, his glasses tucked into the front of his vest. Mochi is curled right on top of him, her fluffy cream body draped across his chest and her head resting on his arm, sound asleep too. A pair of shoes waits under the hammock beside a water bottle, and a garden full of pots, a folding chair, and a wooden fence stretch out behind them.
Many small dogs love to sleep on their people, and for a velcro breed like the Havanese, a shared nap may be the highlight of the day. Lying close provides warmth and security, and it is a sign of deep trust. If you share a hammock with a small dog, be careful getting in and out, and lift the dog rather than letting her jump, since rope netting can catch tiny paws and falls can hurt small legs. On sunny days, make sure the hammock is in the shade and that your dog has access to water, since long-coated dogs can warm up quickly.
Ken and Mochi look like they have perfected the art of the afternoon nap. The gentle sway and the rustle of leaves have done the rest.
Nothing on the to-do list is urgent enough to interrupt a snooze this sweet.
