Grandpa Pulled Grandma In for a Slow Dance in the Kitchen. The Cat Had Opinions.

No music is needed for this dance. In the middle of their busy, lived-in kitchen, Frank and Ruth have wrapped their arms around each other and are swaying slowly, eyes nearly closed, Ruth's head tucked against Frank's chest. Dishes dry in the rack, a basket of onions sits by the stove and the fridge is covered in magnets and notes. At their feet, Snowdrop has joined the moment in her own way. The big white cat stands beside them with her huge plumed tail held high and swishing, looking out with an unimpressed expression. A few tufts of shed white fur dot the floor around her.

Those little clouds of fur on the floor are a familiar sight with a Norwegian Forest Cat. The breed has a thick double coat that sheds moderately year-round and much more heavily during seasonal changes, especially in spring. Brushing a few times a week, and daily during heavy shedding, helps remove loose undercoat before it ends up on floors and furniture. A wide-toothed comb works well for the long outer coat, and a slicker brush or undercoat rake can help with the dense layer beneath. Regular grooming also reduces hairballs, since cats swallow less fur when there's less of it loose.

The floor may need a sweep later, but nobody's thinking about that now. A slow dance in the kitchen after all these years, with their fluffy girl standing guard, is a moment worth holding onto.
