Grandma Loretta Was Shopping the Farmers Market. Cotton Had His Own Agenda.

Market day is in full swing, and the produce stands are overflowing: crates of cucumbers and zucchini, baskets of green beans, boxes of ripe peaches and potted basil plants lined up along the path. Grandma Loretta strolls between the tables in her denim jacket, leash in hand, with a fond little smile as she looks down at her companion. Cotton trots right at her side, white curls bouncing, his mouth open in a big happy grin and his dark eyes bright with excitement. Every new smell at this market is clearly the best thing he's ever encountered.

Bichon Frises often make good outing companions because they're friendly, adaptable and usually enjoy meeting new people. Before bringing a dog to a market, check whether pets are allowed, since rules vary. Keep the leash short in crowds so your dog doesn't wander under tables or get stepped on, and bring water on warm days. Watch what gets dropped on the ground, too. Grapes and raisins, onions, garlic and some pits and seeds can be harmful to dogs, and markets have plenty of tempting scraps. A treat pouch with your dog's own snacks helps keep their attention on you instead of the floor.

Loretta may come home with a bag of peaches and a basil plant, but Cotton's favorite haul is clearly all the attention and new smells. It's a winning trip for both of them.
