Rose Set Up Her Easel in the Yard. Yeti Found a Better Use for the Afternoon.

Fine brushstrokes add the last touches of light to a misty row of trees. Rose sits on a low stool in her backyard, cream cable-knit cardigan buttoned against the cool air, glasses perched on her nose as she leans in to a canvas propped on a tall wooden easel. A palette crowded with blues and greens rests on the easel's ledge. Spread out on the grass right beside her, Yeti has given in to a deep, contented nap, his enormous white ruff fanned around his face and his front paws stretched long. A watering can, a canvas bag, and a few gardening gloves are scattered around the yard.

Samoyeds are known as companionable dogs that like being near their people, so it's no surprise to find one stretched out within arm's reach of a busy owner. They're energetic, but a good walk or play session earlier in the day often leads to a long, peaceful rest. If you paint outdoors with a dog nearby, think about where your supplies sit. Some artist paints contain pigments that aren't safe to swallow, and solvents like turpentine or mineral spirits are hazardous if licked or spilled on fur. Keep rinse water covered so a thirsty dog doesn't help himself, and store brushes and tubes out of reach when you take a break. A big fluffy coat can also pick up wet paint easily. If that happens, avoid solvents and ask your vet how to clean it safely.

Rose captures the trees on canvas, and Yeti captures some well-earned sleep. It's a creative afternoon that works beautifully for both of them.
