Rose Climbed Into the Old Pickup for a Quick Errand. Her Co-Pilot Was Ready First.
The engine's warm, the porch lights are on, and the old pickup is ready for an evening drive. Rose sits behind the big steering wheel in her cream cable-knit cardigan, silver hair swept back and a little silver earring catching the light, smiling softly toward her passenger. Yeti sits tall on the worn bench seat beside her, his white coat fluffed out and a brown collar peeking through, mouth open in a cheerful pant as he faces forward like a seasoned co-pilot. Through the windshield, a row of cozy houses glows in the dusk, potted plants on every porch.
Plenty of dogs love car rides, but safety in a moving vehicle matters for everyone. An unrestrained dog can distract the driver or be injured during a sudden stop, so many experts recommend a crash-tested harness clipped to a seatbelt, a secured crate, or a sturdy barrier. Keep a big dog like a Samoyed off the driver's lap and away from the pedals, and avoid letting him ride with his head far out of a window, where debris can injure eyes or ears. On warm days, never leave a dog in a parked vehicle, even briefly, since temperatures inside can climb quickly and a heavy double coat makes overheating more likely. Bring water on longer trips and plan stops for stretching and bathroom breaks. If your dog gets nervous or carsick, talk to your vet.
Wherever Rose is headed tonight, Yeti is happy simply to be along for the ride. With a co-pilot that cheerful, every errand feels like an adventure.
