Abuela Rosa Takes the Same Walk Every Sunset. She's No Longer the One Leading.
The sky over the field has turned peach and lavender, and the porch light has just flickered on behind them. Abuela Rosa ambles down the dirt road in a plaid shirt, dark pants, and her well-worn floral apron, smiling to herself. Trotting a step ahead, Canela leads the way with her plumed tail held high and her paws stepping neatly through the dust. Along the roadside, potted geraniums, a stack of firewood, a coiled garden hose, and a basket of laundry hint at a full day of chores now happily behind them.
Some cats really will follow their people on walks, especially in quiet, rural places where they know the territory well. It is a sign of a strong bond and a confident cat. Still, cats are not built for long-distance walking the way dogs are, and they tend to stick to routes they consider their own. Dusk can also be a risky time for cats outdoors, with traffic, wildlife, and unfamiliar animals moving around. If your cat likes to tag along, keep walks short, stay on familiar ground, and consider a harness for anything beyond the yard. Making sure your cat is microchipped and wearing a breakaway collar with an ID tag adds peace of mind. And always let the cat set the pace; a cat who sits down in the middle of the road is usually ready to go home.
Tonight, though, the pace is just right. Two friends, one road, and a sky putting on a show for nobody but them.
