Grandpa Hank Set the Patio Table for Breakfast. A Guest Arrived Uninvited.
Breakfast has moved outdoors this morning. Grandpa Hank sits at a rustic wooden patio table in a blue plaid shirt and tan fishing vest, a mug of black coffee in front of him alongside plates of avocado toast, a bowl of strawberries, and a pat of butter. He is chuckling with his eyes nearly closed, reaching over to rub Pewter, who has taken a seat right at the corner of the table. The silver tabby sits upright, yellow eyes wide and fixed forward, looking very much like a guest waiting to be served. Around them, the patio is cheerfully cluttered with garden gloves, a coiled hose, cushioned chairs, and a box of onions.
Outdoor breakfasts are lovely, but a few common breakfast foods are not cat-friendly. Avocado is best not shared, since it is very high in fat and the skin and pit can cause problems. Onions, garlic, and chives are toxic to cats, so keep that box of onions well out of paw's reach. Butter and other rich, fatty foods can upset a cat's stomach, and coffee is never safe for pets because of the caffeine. Strawberries are not toxic, but they offer cats little benefit. If your cat likes to join the table, a small dish of their own food or a couple of cat treats set nearby gives them a way to be included safely, and they will soon learn that this is their part of the meal.
Pewter may not get any toast, but he has secured a spot at the table, plenty of head scratches, and the morning sunshine. That is a very good start to the day.
