Earl Hung the Clean White Sheets Out to Dry. Pearl Saw a Brand New Game.
The clothesline is strung across the backyard and Earl is pinning up a big white sheet with wooden clothespins, laughing out loud at what is happening below. Pearl has launched herself into a full leap underneath the hanging fabric, all four paws off the ground, ears flapping, her own white curls blending with the billowing sheets around her. A blue laundry basket of clothes sits on the ground nearby, along with a watering can, a few pairs of shoes, and potted plants along the wooden fence. The low sun gives the whole scene a warm, golden edge.
Many dogs go wild for flapping fabric, and the reason is simple. Movement triggers play and chase instincts, and a sheet swaying in the breeze looks a lot like something that wants to be caught. To keep laundry day fun and safe, it helps to watch out for clothespins, which can be a choking hazard if chewed, and to keep socks, small clothing items, and laundry pods well out of reach. Swallowed socks are a surprisingly common reason dogs need a vet visit, and laundry detergent can be harmful if a dog bites into it. A quick game of fetch or tug before hanging the wash can burn off some energy and keep the sheets a little cleaner.
The sheets might need a second wash, but Earl is clearly enjoying the show. Some chores are better with a little chaos mixed in.
