Earl Headed Down the Quiet Country Road at Sunset. Pearl Set the Pace.

The sun is dipping behind the trees at the end of the lane, washing the sky in pale gold, and Earl is taking his evening walk at an easy, unhurried pace. He looks off to the side with a gentle half-smile, hands loose at his sides, overalls hanging comfortably over his flannel shirt. Pearl trots along beside him on the pavement in her brown leather collar, mouth open in a cheerful pant and head held high. A weathered wooden fence runs along the roadside, wildflowers and potted plants spill over the yards, and the road curves away into the quiet countryside.

A daily walk is one of the simplest and best habits for both dogs and their people. For dogs, regular walks provide exercise, mental stimulation from all the sights and smells, and a chance to burn off energy that might otherwise turn into mischief. Poodles in particular are active, athletic dogs that do best with daily exercise. For older adults, walking a dog is a natural way to stay active, get fresh air, and stay connected with neighbors. Walking at dusk calls for a few extra precautions. Reflective gear or a light-up collar helps drivers see you both, and on rural roads without sidewalks, walking facing traffic and keeping your dog on the side away from cars is safest.

There is nowhere they need to be and no reason to hurry. Just a quiet road, a warm sunset, and two old friends heading home together.
