Frank and Marion Split One Sandwich on the Bench. Cocoa Was Counting the Halves.

Lunch on the garden bench is a shared affair. Frank and Marion sit close together in their cream cable-knit sweaters, both holding the same sandwich, a thick stack of bread with lettuce and fillings, as if they are deciding who gets the next bite. Marion is smiling down at it fondly, and Frank wears a look of quiet concentration behind his glasses. Cocoa has positioned herself directly in front of them, her curly chocolate head turned to the side, and her eyes slide toward the sandwich with a very knowing look. Hostas, shrubs, and a gray house fill the garden behind them.

That sideways glance is a classic dog move, and it can be hard to resist. Sharing food from your hand, though, can quickly turn a polite dog into a persistent beggar. Many sandwich ingredients are also not ideal for dogs. Onions and garlic are toxic to them, deli meats are often very salty, and rich sauces or cheese can upset the stomach. Grapes and raisins, sometimes served on the side, are dangerous as well. If you want to include your dog, bring along a few plain treats or small pieces of plain cooked meat set aside just for them. Rewarding calm sitting instead of staring helps build better habits over time.

Frank and Marion may hold their ground, or they may not. Either way, Cocoa is making her case in the most charming way possible.
