Clean Sheets on the Line, a Sunny Afternoon, and One Dog Who Found a Shortcut
Wash day in the backyard comes with an unofficial obstacle course. Dolores is pinning a white sheet with wooden clothespins, Frank is straightening a pale blue towel on the next line, and Pepper has discovered that the narrow path between the hanging laundry is the most exciting hallway in the world. He's trotting through with his mouth open in a happy grin, ears flopped, grey coat brushing the hems. A basket of folded clothes waits by the green siding, potted plants crowd the steps, and a stack of fresh towels sits on a shelf near the door.
Games like this are more than silly fun. Dogs, especially clever mixed breeds, benefit from mental exercise as much as physical exercise, and novelty, such as moving fabric, new smells, and a changed yard layout, keeps their minds busy. Simple at-home ideas include hiding treats in a snuffle mat, setting up a cardboard-box tunnel, or practicing "find it" games in the garden. Just keep an eye on clothespins and stray socks, since some dogs love to chew them, and swallowed fabric or small objects can cause real trouble. If a dog ever eats something it shouldn't, call your vet promptly.
The sheets may need one more rinse by the end of the afternoon, but nobody in this yard seems to mind. Some chores just go better with a grey tail swishing through them.
