Abuela Rosa Fired Up the Old Pickup. Her Copilot Was Already in the Passenger Seat.

The old pickup has a cracked dashboard, worn seats, and plenty of character, and Abuela Rosa looks perfectly at home behind its big black steering wheel. She's wearing her flowered apron over a blue plaid shirt, smiling sideways with a twinkle in her eye. Her passenger sits tall on the bench seat: Chispa, the grey Sphynx, upright and alert, giant ears turned forward, pale yellow eyes looking straight ahead as if she's reading the road signs. Out the window, laundry hangs on a line and potted plants and a green watering can crowd a busy little yard.

Riding loose in a vehicle is risky for a cat, even on short trips, because sudden stops can throw them forward and a frightened cat may crawl under the pedals. The safest way for a cat to travel is in a sturdy, well-ventilated carrier secured with a seat belt, ideally on the back seat. Many cats feel calmer when a familiar blanket is inside the carrier. For a Sphynx, temperature matters too: never leave a cat in a parked vehicle, where heat can build dangerously fast, and keep the cab comfortably warm in cooler weather, since hairless cats get chilly quickly.

Wherever Rosa is headed, it's clear she enjoys the company. A good copilot, after all, is one who never complains about the radio station.
