The First Snow Fell Overnight. Grandpa Earl Opened the Window So Domino Could See.

Fresh snow has dusted the rooftops and hedges outside, and Grandpa Earl has opened the old window so his best friend can see. He leans on the sill in a plaid shirt and fishing vest, one arm wrapped around Domino's chest, white mustache curled into a fond smile. Domino has his giant front paws hanging over the edge of the window frame, spotted chest pressed close to Earl, head lifted high as he gazes out at the winter scene with keen interest. Behind them, a cozy kitchen with hanging utensils and folded towels glows in warm light.

Of course, holding a Great Dane up isn't quite like holding a small dog, and here Domino is doing most of the standing himself. That's for the best, since lifting giant dogs can strain backs and joints on both ends. Great Danes have short coats and little body fat, so they can feel the cold more than people expect. In winter, many benefit from a warm dog coat on walks, shorter outings in freezing temperatures, and a cozy bed away from drafts. Paw care matters too; wiping off ice and road salt after a walk helps prevent cracked pads and keeps dogs from licking up chemicals.

Domino's ears are perked and his nose is working overtime. A first snowfall is always worth seeing, especially with someone who'll hold the window open for you.
