Grandpa Earl Stepped Out Into the Morning Mist With His Coffee. Domino Was Waiting.

Morning mist hangs over the yard, softening the garden beds and the blue house behind them, and Grandpa Earl has stepped out with his first cup of coffee. Sitting on the weathered porch steps in his worn cap, plaid shirt, and khaki fishing vest, he raises the cream-colored mug for a slow sip, glasses fogging just a little. Domino, the harlequin Great Dane, has settled on the step below, his big spotted head tilted up, nose stretched hopefully toward the mug, ears soft and eyes bright. A coiled hose, stone planters, and a few fallen leaves complete the quiet scene.

That curious sniff is about as close as Domino should get. Coffee, tea, and energy drinks contain caffeine, which dogs are much more sensitive to than people, and even modest amounts can cause restlessness, a racing heart, or worse. Used coffee grounds and beans are especially concentrated, so they should go straight into a covered trash can or compost bin out of reach. For a morning ritual both can enjoy, a fresh bowl of water and a handful of the dog's regular kibble or a small biscuit on the porch make a fine substitute.

Earl takes his coffee black and his mornings slow, and Domino seems to approve of both. Some daily routines are simply better shared, especially with a friend who never complains about the early hour.
