An older man naps on a cushioned wooden porch swing while a harlequin Great Dane sleeps curled up beside him. 38 / 39

Grandpa Earl Sat on the Porch Swing for a Quick Rest. Domino Claimed the Rest of It.

The wooden porch swing hangs still on its chains, and both of its passengers are fast asleep. Grandpa Earl is slumped comfortably to one side, head tipped down, hands resting on his khaki pants, his fishing vest rumpled and his white mustache drooping in deep slumber. Taking up the rest of the swing, and then some, Domino lies curled up on the cushion, his long harlequin body folded, one white front leg stretched off the edge, his spotted head resting peacefully, eyes closed. Potted plants, a blue watering can, and a pair of boots line the porch behind them in the soft afternoon light.

It's a funny thing about Great Danes: despite their size, many seem convinced they're lap dogs. They love curling up close to their people on couches, beds, and yes, porch swings. Before letting a giant dog share a hanging swing, though, it's important to check the weight rating of the swing, its chains, and its ceiling hooks. A full-grown Dane can weigh as much as an adult person, and the combined load can exceed what some swings are built for. Low, sturdy furniture or a big dog bed placed near your chair is often a safer cuddle spot.

This swing seems to be holding up just fine, and the nap appears to be going perfectly. Some afternoons are simply made for dozing next to your best friend.
