The First Snow Fell Overnight. Grandpa Lifted Moose Up to See It.

Outside, the whole world has turned white. Snow piles on the evergreens and blankets the yard, and Walt has scooped up Moose, all of him, to give him a better view through the frosty window. The Bernese rests one big paw on Walt's shoulder and leans his face toward the glass, nose almost touching it, eyes wide with curiosity. Walt smiles with his eyes half closed, arms wrapped around his dog's chest. Behind them, the mudroom is a happy jumble of boots, knit blankets, a rope toy, and coats on hooks.

Bernese Mountain Dogs come from the Swiss Alps, and most of them genuinely love snow. Their thick double coat insulates them well, and many will happily roll and romp in a fresh snowfall. Even so, winter calls for some care. Ice can crack or cut paw pads, and road salt and de-icers can irritate feet or upset a stomach if licked off, so wiping paws after walks is a good habit. Snowballs that collect between toes can be trimmed out with careful grooming. And while most Bernese tolerate cold well, puppies and seniors may need shorter outings, so watch for shivering.

One thing is clear: Moose wants to be out there. Walt probably knows it too. It won't be long before both of them are bundled up and stepping into the first snow of the season together.
