Grandpa Made a Big Bowl of Popcorn for Movie Night. Peanut Did a Taste Test.
The lights are low and the popcorn is fresh. Earl sits on the couch in his flannel shirt and overalls, glasses perched on his nose, holding a full bowl in one hand and grinning down at his movie-night companion. Peanut has settled on the cushion right beside him and leans her nose toward the bowl, taking a long, thoughtful sniff. A family portrait hangs on the wall, a stack of books and a little plant sit on a side table, a bare-bulb lamp glows in the corner, and knit blankets are piled on the sofa.
Popcorn is a classic movie snack, but it is not an ideal treat for dogs, especially small ones. Plain, air-popped popcorn in a piece or two is generally not toxic, but butter, salt, and seasonings can upset a dog's stomach, and unpopped kernels and hulls can get stuck in teeth or pose a choking risk for a tiny breed like a Yorkie. A better plan for movie night is to have a few small dog treats or a chew ready, so your dog gets something special while you enjoy your popcorn. Keeping the bowl out of reach when you get up for a refill also helps.
Peanut may have to settle for a dog biscuit, but she seems happy just to be included. Earl clearly loves the company. Whatever is on the screen tonight, the best part of the evening is sitting right there on the couch.
