Car wash day has turned into splash day. Abuela Rosa stands in the driveway in a blue T-shirt and her floral apron, glasses hooked on her collar, holding a garden hose with her thumb pressed over the nozzle to make a sparkling fan of water. She is laughing at what is happening next to her. Chispa has launched herself up onto her hind legs, mouth wide open, trying to catch the spray midair, her blue collar soaked and droplets flying everywhere. Behind them, an old blue sedan drips with suds, and a weathered wooden fence and the open garage frame the scene on a cloudy afternoon.

Lots of terriers adore chasing water, and for an energetic Jack Russell it can be a fantastic outlet on a warm day. A few common-sense tips make it safer. Use a gentle spray rather than a hard jet aimed at the face, and keep sessions short so a dog does not gulp large amounts of water, which can make them sick. Hoses left in the sun can also heat the water inside, so run it for a moment before spraying a pup. Car soaps and cleaning products should be kept away from dogs, since licking them can cause stomach upset. Afterward, a towel and some sun will dry most short coats quickly.

The car may end up only half clean, and both of them will be thoroughly damp. Judging by Rosa's laugh, that was the real point of the afternoon.
