Abuela Was One Move From Winning at Checkers When Someone Joined the Game
The red and black board is set up on an old porch table, and the game is getting serious. Abuela Rosa leans in with her glasses on and a sly half smile, her fingers resting on a black checker as she weighs her next move. She wears an olive T-shirt under her floral apron, and a glass of water and a pair of sunglasses sit by her elbow. Across the way, Chispa has propped one scruffy paw on the table edge and lifted her whiskered face to just above the board, eyes fixed on Rosa as if waiting her turn. The evening sun spills over potted plants, a coiled hose and a pair of shoes by the rail.
Board games like checkers are great for keeping the mind active. They involve planning, memory and a bit of friendly competition, and many older adults enjoy them as a social pastime. Dogs, of course, cannot play, but they love being included. When small game pieces are around, though, it pays to keep an eye on curious noses, because checkers, dice and similar pieces can be a choking hazard or cause blockages if swallowed. Putting the pieces away promptly after play, and keeping a chew toy handy for your pup, can help the evening stay fun and safe for everyone.
Rosa is probably winning, though Chispa seems convinced she could help with strategy. The real victory is simply sharing the porch on a warm evening.
