Abuela's Knitting Was Going Perfectly Until She Looked Down at the Floor

The knitting is going well. The yarn situation on the floor is another story. Abuela Rosa sits in her chair in a gray sweater and floral apron, glasses on, needles clicking as a cozy beige piece grows in her hands. A basket of fresh skeins sits on the table nearby, alongside a stack of folded blankets, papers and a mug. Down below, Chispa has wandered straight into the loose strands and is now thoroughly wrapped in a web of cream-colored yarn, threads looped around her legs and chest. She looks up with an open-mouthed, slightly sheepish grin, clearly hoping someone will notice before she becomes part of the scarf.

Yarn looks like the perfect toy to many pets, but it can be risky. If a dog swallows long strands of yarn, string or thread, it can cause a serious intestinal blockage that may need emergency care. Knitters with curious dogs often keep yarn in a lidded basket or a yarn bowl with a small opening, and put projects away when stepping out of the room. Giving a dog a sturdy rope toy or chew while you work offers something safe to focus on. If you suspect your dog has swallowed yarn or string, do not try to pull it out yourself. Call your vet right away.

Rosa will soon set down the needles and carefully untangle her helper. Then, most likely, the yarn basket gets a lid.
