The Patio Lights Came On, Abuela Picked Up a Bite, and Someone Was Ready

Dusk has settled over the little patio, and the string lights are glowing warm against the stucco wall. Abuela Rosa sits at a weathered wooden table spread with bowls, a stack of tortillas, a mug and a few napkins, and she is smiling the kind of smile that crinkles every corner of her face. Her fingers hold a small bite pinched just above the table edge. In the foreground, Chispa leans in with a scruffy coat, bright brown eyes and a very serious expression, staring at the camera as though she would like a witness for the deal about to happen. Potted plants, sandals by the steps and a darkening blue sky finish the scene.

Sharing a meal with a dog is one of life's small joys, but it pays to know what is safe. Plain cooked egg, a little unseasoned chicken or a bit of plain tortilla is usually fine in small amounts for most healthy dogs. Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins and chocolate are not, and avocado skins and pits should stay well out of reach. Spicy salsa and heavily seasoned foods can upset a dog's stomach. Treats, including table scraps, should only be a small part of a dog's daily diet. If you are unsure about a food or your pup has a sensitive tummy, talk to your vet.

Rosa knows the rules, and she also knows that a tiny shared bite under the patio lights is how you say goodnight to a good day.
