Grandma Made the Perfect Patio Breakfast. Pip Had His Eye on One Thing.

The patio is glowing with warm early light, and the breakfast spread looks good enough to share. Grandma June sits at a weathered outdoor table in her denim shirt, silver braid draped over one shoulder, smiling softly at her small companion. In front of her sits a plate of toast topped with sliced avocado and cherry tomatoes, a handful of raspberries and blueberries and a mug of milky coffee. Pip has pulled himself right up to the table's edge, wispy blue and tan coat lit up by the sun, gazing at the plate with an intense, hopeful stare. Behind them, the garden blooms with leafy plants and pale flowers.

Sharing breakfast with a dog is tempting, but some foods are better left on your plate. Avocado should not be shared, since its skin, pit and leaves contain a compound that can upset dogs' stomachs and the pit is a choking hazard. Coffee contains caffeine, which is harmful to dogs. Raw tomatoes are best avoided too, especially stems and leaves. On the other hand, a few fresh blueberries or raspberries are generally safe treats for most dogs in small amounts. Small dogs like Yorkies need only tiny portions, so even healthy extras should be kept modest. If you are unsure about any food, talk to your vet.

June's toast is safe for now, and Pip will probably walk away with a couple of berries. That seems like a fair breakfast deal for everyone.
