Grandma Sat Down to Rock in Her Old Chair. Then She Glanced Down at the Rug.

Soft window light spills across a quiet room, and the only sound is the faint creak of old wood. Grandma June sits in a classic wooden rocking chair dressed head to toe in denim, her silver braid falling down the front of her shirt and a mustard throw draped over the arm. She is looking down at the floor with a tender, private smile. Stretched out on the woven rug right at the base of the rockers lies Pip, completely conked out, his little head resting on his paws and his blue and tan coat fanning out over the rug. A potted plant sits by the window and a sheer curtain lets the daylight in.

Dogs often pick sleeping spots right at their person's feet. It keeps them close, lets them feel any movement and offers a sense of security. With a rocking chair, though, that loyalty can lead to pinched paws or tails if the chair tips back unexpectedly. Teaching a small dog to settle on a bed a short distance away, or placing a soft mat just to the side of the rockers, helps keep everyone safe. Yorkies are lightweight and can be easy to miss underfoot, so it is good practice to glance down before standing or rocking, especially in dimmer light.

June has decided the rocking can wait a moment. Nothing is quite as sweet as watching a little friend sleep this soundly.
