Grandma Got Down on the Rug for a Training Lesson. Pip Was Ready to Show Off.

Class is in session on the living room rug, and the star pupil is doing beautifully. Grandma June kneels beside a coffee table in her denim jacket and cream T-shirt, silver braid hanging over her shoulder, gently holding Pip's raised front paw in her hand. Her face is lit up with a proud, delighted smile. Pip sits up straight on the patterned rug, chest out and paw extended, looking at her with bright, eager eyes as if waiting for his well-earned reward. Around them, a box of toys spills open, a rope toy and stuffed bear lie nearby and a mug of tea, keys and glasses sit on the table.

Shake or give paw is a classic trick, and it is a great one for small dogs like Yorkies, who are clever and food motivated. Start with your dog in a sit, hold a treat in a closed hand near their paw and wait for them to paw at it. The moment they lift their foot, say your cue word, praise and reward. With short, repeated sessions, most dogs learn to lift the paw on cue. Training like this builds trust and gives a dog mental exercise, which is especially helpful for busy breeds. Keep treats tiny for small dogs so they do not add too many calories.

Pip has nailed it, and June is beaming like a proud teacher. The next lesson may be roll over, but for now, a treat and a cuddle are in order.
