Clouds Rolled In Over the Boardwalk. Abuela Rosa and Mango Stayed Right Where They Were.

Gray clouds hang low over the beach town, and the boardwalk planks are weathered silver from years of salt air. Abuela Rosa has settled onto a bench outside a blue-trimmed cottage, a pot of red flowers by the railing behind her. Mango lies stretched out on the boards in front of her, paws tucked forward, amber eyes fixed on whoever is looking. Her hand rests gently on his back, scratching right along the spine, and his whiskers fan out in that relaxed way that says the petting is acceptable and should continue.

Many cats enjoy the outdoors, but a busy boardwalk brings plenty of surprises: dogs, bicycles, gulls, crowds, and hot boards on sunny days. A cat that ventures out with its person is safest in a well-fitted harness and leash, introduced slowly at home first so it feels normal. Cats overheat more easily than people realize, so shade and fresh water matter, and sandy beaches can hide sharp shells and litter. Not every cat wants an adventure, either. Some are happiest watching the world from a window, and that is perfectly fine.

On this cloudy afternoon, though, there is no rush to be anywhere. The sea breeze is cool, the bench is solid, and a warm orange cat is purring under a familiar hand. Sometimes the best views at the shore are the ones closest to you.
