Abuela Rosa Took Her First Sip of Coffee. Mango Watched Every Single One.
Early light is just reaching the neighborhood, turning the treetops gold while the porch steps stay cool and shaded. Abuela Rosa sits on the concrete step in her blue shirt and rose-print apron, glasses perched on her nose, lifting a big cream mug for that first slow sip. One step down, Mango sits tall with his tail curled around his feet, gazing up at the mug as though it holds secrets. A blue watering can, a pot of red geraniums, and a basket of fallen leaves round out the quiet morning scene.
Coffee is one of those human treats that should stay firmly on the human side. Caffeine can affect a cat's heart and nervous system, and even small amounts are not recommended. Milk is not much better, since many adult cats have trouble digesting lactose and may end up with an upset stomach. The good news is that cats rarely need anything from the mug to feel included. What they usually want is the routine itself: the same step, the same person, the same calm few minutes before the day gets busy. Cats tend to thrive on predictable rhythms, and a shared morning ritual can be a real comfort to them.
So Mango gets his share in the form of company, not coffee. He watches each sip with great seriousness, Abuela Rosa hums a little between them, and the sun climbs over the rooftops one porch at a time.
