Abuela Rosa Lit the Fire and Pulled Out Her Old Quilt. Mango Claimed It Within Seconds.

A small fire crackles in the plain whitewashed fireplace, the logs glowing orange at the base. Abuela Rosa has wrapped herself in a patchwork quilt of rust, cream, and floral squares, the edges tucked over her shoulders like a cape. She smiles straight ahead, cheeks warm from the fire. Mango lies stretched across her lap on top of the quilt, front paws together, looking very much like he arranged the whole evening himself. A teacup, a stack of books, and a basket wait on the little table nearby.

Fireplaces are wonderfully cozy, but they need a little extra caution with pets in the house. A sturdy screen keeps sparks and embers in, and stops a curious cat from getting too close to the flames. Cats sometimes lie so close to heat sources that their fur gets hot, so it is good to make sure they have a comfortable spot a safe distance away. Fireplace tools, matches, and fire-starter products should be stored out of reach, and ashes should cool completely before cleanup. A working smoke detector and a properly maintained chimney protect everyone, two-legged and four-legged alike.

With the screen in place and the quilt piled high, this is about as snug as an evening gets. Mango's eyes are already getting heavy, and Abuela Rosa looks ready to stay put until the last log burns down to embers.
