A grandma in a denim shirt and floral apron walks down a dirt road at sunset as a fluffy orange cat strolls ahead of her. 24 / 35

Every Evening, Abuela Rosa Walks the Same Country Road. She Never Walks It Alone.

The sky is fading from slate blue to peach over the tree line, and the porch lamp on the old farmhouse has just been switched on. Abuela Rosa walks slowly down the gravel road in her denim shirt, flowered apron, and sturdy boots, smiling at the cat padding along in front of her. Mango leads the way with his fluffy coat glowing in the last light, eyes forward and tail swinging behind. Rubber boots, a coil of rope, and a blue watering can sit by the porch they just left behind.

Some cats really do enjoy walking with their people, especially on quiet routes they know well. A few will follow a familiar person around the yard or down a lane like a dog would. Even so, roads and dusk can be risky. Cars may not see a small animal in low light, and evening is when many wild predators become active. Walking a cat on a harness and leash is the safest way to explore beyond the yard. Reflective gear helps people be seen too, and it is wise to head home before full dark.

For Mango and Abuela Rosa, this short stroll seems to be part of the evening routine, a little loop down the road and back before supper. The air is cooling, the crickets are starting up, and the porch light will be waiting when they turn around.
