Grandpa Gus Cast His Line. Waffles Cast a Few Glances at the Tackle Box.

The pond is calm, the dock boards are weathered, and Grandpa Gus is in his element. His fishing vest is dotted with lures, pliers, and hooks, a few fish already lie in the bucket at his knee, and a rod rests behind him with its line slack in the water. But the person getting the most attention right now is Waffles, who has propped himself against Gus's side with his tongue out and his dark, round eyes locked on his grandpa's face. Gus is looking down at him through his glasses with a warm, crinkled grin. A tackle box sits open nearby, and reeds sway at the water's edge.

Fishing outings with a dog are fun, but a few precautions go a long way. French Bulldogs are not strong swimmers because of their heavy front ends and short noses, so a snug dog life jacket is wise near any water, and a leash helps if the dock has gaps. Keep hooks, lures, and bait well out of reach, since hooks can cause serious injuries, and never let a dog eat fish scraps or bones. Bring shade and fresh drinking water, as lake water can carry germs that upset a dog's stomach. If your dog is new to docks, introduce them slowly and let him sniff the boards first.

Gus does not mind if the fish are slow today. A good day on the dock has more to do with the company than with the catch, and Waffles is excellent company.
