Waffles Stopped Walking at the Bottom of the Steps. Gus Knew Why.

The walk was lovely, but Waffles has officially had enough. Grandpa Gus has scooped him up at the bottom of the wooden porch steps, one arm under the dog's chest and the other holding his back legs, and he is smiling as he climbs. The fawn French Bulldog hangs there in his blue collar with his ears perked and his legs dangling, looking only mildly embarrassed. Gus wears his fishing vest over a blue shirt and khaki shorts, glasses on his nose and mustache curling up. Behind them potted plants line the railing, and a hose and a pair of shoes wait beside the door.

Short legs and a stocky build mean French Bulldogs tire quickly on long walks, particularly in warm weather. Flat faces make cooling down harder, so plan for short, easy outings, stop in the shade, and bring water. Learn the signs of overheating: heavy panting, lots of drooling, or lagging behind, and head home right away if you see them. When lifting a dog, support his chest and hindquarters rather than lifting only under the front legs, which keeps his back comfortable. Steps can be tough on a dog with a long back, so ramps or a gentle carry can help. Your vet can advise on a safe exercise level for your dog.

Gus does not mind the extra trip. Waffles is not heavy, the afternoon is warm, and the porch is just a few steps away, with a cool floor and a bowl of water waiting.
