One Cone, Two Friends: Grandpa Gus Shares Summer With Waffles
It is a hot day, and Grandpa Gus has crouched down to dog level with a vanilla cone in his hand and a twinkle in his eye. His white mustache is bushy, his fishing vest is full of lures and keys, and his whole face is creased with a grin. Waffles leans in with his nose pointed right at the ice cream, his dark eyes wide and his ears swiveled forward, a green collar around his neck. They are standing on a sunny stoop with a woven doormat, a pair of old sandals, and a terra cotta pot of flowers behind them. A drop of cream is already melting down the side.
Ice cream is a favorite treat to share, but dogs can be sensitive to it. Many adult dogs have trouble digesting milk and may get an upset stomach, and the sugar is not healthy in large amounts. A single lick of plain vanilla is usually fine for a healthy dog, but chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts, and anything with the sweetener xylitol are dangerous and should never be offered. Because Frenchies overheat easily, a cool treat on a hot day can feel good, but shade and fresh water do more to keep him comfortable. Safe frozen options include dog-friendly frozen treats or ice cubes. Ask your vet which treats are best for your dog.
Gus is happy to share a taste and finish the rest himself. It is a small summer ritual that makes both of them smile, one cone at a time.
