Grandpa Gus Unrolled His Yoga Mat. Waffles Joined the Class.
The living room has become a tiny fitness studio. Grandpa Gus sits on a gray yoga mat with his legs out in front of him, reaching toward his toes and grinning at his own effort. His white mustache is as cheerful as ever, and his fishing vest is zipped over a gray shirt. Beside him, Waffles has dropped into a perfect play bow, front legs stretched forward and rump in the air, ears tipped, as if the two of them were practicing together. The cozy room behind them has a soft couch, a knitted blanket, a lamp, and a rope toy and a tennis ball tucked on the floor.
Gentle stretching is a healthy habit for older adults, and a dog who plays along makes it more fun. The play bow is a natural dog stretch, and many dogs do it after waking or before playtime. French Bulldogs are not athletes, though, so keep any shared exercise easy and short. Their short noses and sturdy builds mean they tire fast, and slippery floors can be hard on their joints, so a mat is a good idea. Keep sessions in a cool room, offer water afterward, and let him rest when he wants to. Talk with your own doctor about suitable exercises for you, and your vet for your dog.
Gus stretches a little further than yesterday, and Waffles holds his bow just a bit longer. Neither of them is competing, and both of them are winning.
