Grandpa Gus Watered the Flower Beds. Waffles Followed Every Drop.
The sun has dipped low and the porch lamp is glowing, which means it is time to water the flowers. Grandpa Gus tips a teal watering can over a bed of orange marigolds, purple petunias, and pink blooms, a thin stream of water splashing down. His glasses are low on his nose, and the tool-packed pockets of his fishing vest bulge as he leans forward. Waffles sits right behind the can, his fawn face lifted and his dark eyes following every drop. A garden hose, a pair of sandals, and a stack of folded towels sit in the warm light behind them on the patio.
Gardens are lovely places to spend time with a dog, and a few precautions keep everyone safe. Some common plants, including lilies, azaleas, and sago palms, can be poisonous to pets, so check what is growing in your beds. Fertilizers, mulch, and slug bait can also harm dogs if eaten. Water in the evening when it is cooler, since French Bulldogs overheat easily, and keep fresh water in a bowl nearby so he is not tempted by puddles. Dogs can also dig up fresh soil, so keep an eye on him. If you think your dog ate something in the garden, call your vet or a pet poison hotline.
Gus finishes the last row and sets down the can. The flowers will be brighter tomorrow, and Waffles will no doubt take credit for the whole thing.
