The First Snow Came Down. Grandpa Gus Gave Waffles a Better View.

The first snow has arrived, and Grandpa Gus has picked up Waffles so the two of them can watch it together. He stands at the window in his plaid shirt and fishing vest, holding the fawn French Bulldog against his chest with both hands, and looking out with a calm, pleased expression. Waffles stretches his front paws up and gazes out with wide dark eyes, ears high, the whole world white and quiet in his reflection. Beyond the glass, bare trees and a snow-dusted yard stretch toward the fence, and a garden chair sits half covered in white.

Snow can be exciting for dogs, but it is also a hazard for short-coated breeds like the French Bulldog, who feel cold quickly. A quick outing in a warm coat is fine, followed by a thorough towel dry for paws and belly. Wipe away salt and de-icer, which can irritate paw pads and make a dog sick if licked. Frenchies also struggle in extreme weather because of their short noses, so keep cold outings brief. When lifting, support his chest and hips with both hands, which is gentler on his back. Watching from a window is a safe way to enjoy the first flakes, and it gives a curious dog something to look at all afternoon.

Gus holds him there as long as Waffles wants. The snow keeps coming down, and for a little while neither one is in any hurry to go outside.
