Earl Dropped the Tailgate to Rest by the Field. Custard Hopped Right Up.

Out where the gravel gives way to grass, Earl has dropped the tailgate of his old truck and settled in to look at the field. His red buffalo plaid shirt is rolled at the cuffs, and his face is creased into the kind of grin that comes from a good day's work being finished. Custard sits on the edge of the tailgate right beside his knee, plush and pale against the weathered metal, tilting her flat little face up toward him. Behind them, a wire fence held up by crooked posts encloses a garden plot, with watering cans and tools leaning by the shed.

Taking a cat on outings like this works best when the cat is comfortable with it. Some cats genuinely enjoy short trips once they are used to a harness, while others are happiest at home, and both are perfectly normal. If you do bring a cat to an open space, keep her leashed, since a startled cat can bolt surprisingly fast, and check that she is microchipped with up-to-date contact details. Farms and gardens can also hold hazards such as fertilizers, pest baits, and certain plants, so stay close and keep an eye on what she sniffs. A carrier in the truck gives her a familiar safe spot if things get too exciting.

Custard does not appear to need an escape plan today. She has a view, a warm tailgate, and her favorite person within nose-bumping distance, which is about as good as an afternoon gets.
