Earl Was Halfway Through Stitching the Blue Quilt When Custard Moved In

Needle in hand and glasses perched on his nose, Earl is working stitch by stitch along a blue patchwork quilt spread across the table. The project would be going a little faster if not for Custard, who has claimed the softest, warmest pile of fabric and fallen sound asleep, curled into a perfect cream crescent. Earl does not seem bothered. He simply sews around her. Behind them, a basket of yarn balls sits on a wooden chair, stacks of folded quilts climb the wall, and a framed landscape painting hangs above the sofa.

Cats are drawn to fabric piles for good reasons. Soft materials hold warmth, especially when they have been handled or sat near a sunny window, and they often carry the familiar scent of a favorite person. A project in progress is also new and interesting, which makes it irresistible. If you sew or knit with a cat around, keep needles, pins, and especially loose thread and yarn out of reach. Swallowed string can cause serious problems, so anything that looks like it might have been eaten is worth a call to your vet. A spare folded blanket of her own on a nearby chair can sometimes tempt a cat away from the work.

Then again, maybe Custard is just testing the quilt for comfort. Judging by how deeply she is sleeping, Earl's handiwork passes with flying colors.
